The greenest stand is the one you build twice

Sustainability in live events is not a material you choose at the end. It is a structural decision you make in week one, and most briefs make it by accident.

Every stand we build has a carbon cost, and most of it is decided long before anyone specifies a finish. It is decided when someone draws a shape that can only exist once.

The industry talks about sustainability in terms of materials. Recycled substrate, FSC timber, water-based paint. All of it worth doing, none of it the main event. The main event is whether the thing you build in July can be built again in September, in a different footprint, without a skip.

Design for the second build, not the first

When we developed the Bentley pavilion for Goodwood, re-use was in the brief from the first sketch. A 500 square metre two-storey structure, designed so the elements could come apart, travel and go back up somewhere else. That constraint shaped the geometry. It ruled out certain joins, certain spans, certain one-off flourishes that would have looked good in a render and gone in a bin in August.

Fortescue at Bauma worked the same way, built as a modular multi-level system rather than a bespoke sculpture. Both stands are more sustainable than a timber-and-recycled-board equivalent that gets scrapped after four days, and neither of them shouts about it.

A structure you can only build once is a structure you have agreed to throw away. That decision gets made at concept stage, by people talking about shapes.

The awkward arithmetic

Here is the part the industry is quieter about. On most large activations, the material footprint is not the biggest line. Freight is. Power is. Crew travel is. A stand made of impeccable materials, trucked across Europe in half-full lorries and run off diesel generators for a week, is not a sustainable stand. It is a well-specified one.

That means the useful questions are boring ones. How many vehicle movements does this design require? Can it fit the truck pack efficiently, or does the hero element waste a third of the load? Is there mains power on site, and if not, what is the honest fuel estimate?

What to ask for

  • A re-use plan, not a recycling plan. Where does this go next, and who stores it?
  • The truck count, early. It tells you more than the material schedule does.
  • A power strategy before the lighting design, not after it.
  • One number you will actually report on afterwards, rather than a page of intentions.

None of this requires a compromise on ambition. The Bentley pavilion was the biggest presence Bentley has had at Goodwood. It just also happens to still exist.
